Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) Project aimed to strengthen the capacity of PFAG and producer organizations to engage in effective advocacy, business development, and climate change mitigation initiatives. As the lead organization for the Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Producers (GhaFFaP), PFAG implemented activities focused on landscape restoration, sustainable natural resource management, social protection, and climate resilience. Through capacity building, community engagement, and the promotion of sustainable livelihood practices, the project contributed to enhancing environmental sustainability, strengthening farmer organizations, and improving the resilience and livelihoods of forest and farm producers across Ghana.

Objective

To strengthen the capacity of PFAG to engage in effective advocacy and business development for the benefit of its members and other producer organizations. As well as mitigate the effect of climate change through various activities

Project Summary

The FFF project focused primarily on building the capacities of smallholder farmers on landscape restoration models. PFAG was also the lead organisation for the Ghana federation of Forest and Farm Producers (GhaFFaP). The main activities carried out include:

  1. Fire volunteers in eight communities in the Savannah ecological zone were trained as a bush fire management strategy
  2. A social protection workshop and profiling of GhaFFaP members was carried out. In collaboration with Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and other affiliate social protection agencies, the capacity of GhaFFaP members was built on social protection safety net programmes in Ghana
  3. A Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) workshop was organized for PFAG regional and district focal persons across sixteen regions
  4. A pilot of Sustainable green charcoal production and activated charcoal products in 2 districts where GhaFFaP members who are into charcoal production was carried out.

Major outcomes

Key outcomes include 

  1. Fire volunteers in eight communities strengthened to support the national Fire Service and help mitigate the incidence of bush fires in the community by training farmers on bush fire prevention techniques and acting as first respondents in the event of bush fires
  2. Awareness of GhaFFaP members increased on social protection programmes in the country. Many members were also supported to access government support through the Planting for Food and Jobs programme for their farming activities
  3. Improved capacities of farmer leaders in the ROAM which is a climate change and mitigation and adaptation strategy. This will contribute towards building climate resilient landscapes
  4. Farmers capacity in sustainable charcoal production was developed in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment and improve the income levels of farmers through alternative livelihood opportunities
