Agricultural Governance is a key thematic area through which PFAG promotes inclusive, evidence-based, and farmer-centered agricultural policies and investments in Ghana. Through advocacy, research, stakeholder engagement, policy monitoring, and strategic partnerships, PFAG works to ensure that the interests of smallholder farmers are reflected in national agricultural development frameworks. The association has implemented initiatives focused on irrigation development, climate resilience, fertilizer accessibility, agricultural infrastructure, trade policy awareness, and the monitoring of flagship government programmes to strengthen food security and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Objective

To strengthen agricultural governance by promoting effective policies, increased public investment, climate resilience, improved access to agricultural inputs, and active participation of smallholder farmers in policy formulation, implementation, and monitoring processes that contribute to food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Major Achievements

PFAG has successfully influenced policy reforms and strengthened stakeholder collaboration within Ghana’s agricultural sector. Key achievements include securing government commitments for improved irrigation development and agricultural infrastructure, contributing to reforms in the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0) programme, facilitating the adoption of electronic registration systems for fertilizer subsidy distribution, and increasing access to subsidized fertilizer for over 10,000 farmers. Through climate advocacy efforts, PFAG contributed to the allocation of GH¢200 million for the construction of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam. The association has also strengthened partnerships with institutions such as GIDA, MOFA, WIAD, and other stakeholders, leading to enhanced farmer participation in policy processes and improved support for smallholder farmers across the country.

Projects

PFAG implements a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, strengthening agricultural governance, promoting sustainable agriculture, enhancing food and nutrition security, supporting climate resilience, advancing agribusiness development, and empowering rural communities. Through strategic partnerships with development agencies, government institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector, PFAG delivers innovative interventions that address the challenges facing farmers while creating opportunities for increased productivity, income generation, market access, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth. These projects contribute to PFAG’s vision of ensuring a life of dignity for peasant farmers and building resilient agricultural systems that support food security and sustainable development in Ghana.
