Trade and Agribusiness is a key thematic area of PFAG’s work aimed at strengthening farmer institutions, improving access to finance, and enhancing the participation of smallholder farmers in local, regional, and international markets. Through strategic partnerships, advocacy, research, and capacity-building initiatives, PFAG supports farmers to take advantage of emerging trade opportunities, influence agricultural policies, and build resilient agribusiness enterprises. These interventions contribute to improved livelihoods, sustainable employment, financial inclusion, and increased competitiveness of smallholder farmers within Ghana’s evolving agricultural and trade landscape.

Objective

The objective of PFAG’s Trade and Agribusiness interventions is to enhance sustainable employment, improve access to finance, strengthen farmer organizations, and promote the active participation of smallholder farmers in agricultural policy and trade processes. The initiatives also seek to increase farmers’ awareness of market opportunities, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while supporting agribusiness development and sustainable agricultural growth.

Major Achievements

PFAG has strengthened financial inclusion for farmers through the establishment of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) and support for farmer-owned financial institutions, improving access to credit and investment opportunities. The association has successfully influenced agricultural policy reforms, including improvements to government flagship programmes such as One Village One Dam (1V1D). Through research, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, PFAG has increased smallholder farmers’ awareness and participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and secured representation on key national technical committees. These efforts have enhanced the capacity of farmer organizations, promoted sustainable employment in agribusiness, and positioned smallholder farmers to benefit from emerging trade and market opportunities.

Projects

PFAG’s Trade and Agribusiness initiatives are designed to strengthen smallholder farmer institutions, improve access to finance, and enhance farmers’ participation in agricultural policy and market opportunities. Through strategic partnerships with organizations such as GIZ and OSIWA, PFAG supports farmers with capacity building, advocacy, financial inclusion, and awareness creation on key agricultural and trade policies, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). These interventions promote sustainable employment, strengthen farmer organizations, improve access to financial services, and empower smallholder farmers to actively participate in decision-making processes that influence agricultural development, trade, and sustainable livelihoods in Ghana.
